The town of Taxco de Alarcón in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, is the undisputed center of the Mexican silver tradition — a craft city whose identity has been inseparable from silversmithing since the colonial era, and which experienced a remarkable renaissance in the 1930s and 1940s under the influence of the American designer William Spratling. Spratling established the first modern silver workshop in Taxco in 1931, training a generation of Mexican silversmiths in techniques that blended pre-Columbian motifs with modernist design sensibility — and in doing so created the foundation for what became one of the great craft traditions of the 20th century.

Mid-century Mexican sterling silver — hallmarked Mexico and Sterling, as this set is — represents the golden age of Taxco production: a period of extraordinary creative energy and technical refinement in which Mexican silversmiths produced jewelry of international quality and distinction.
